Meeting Notes: January 10, 2008

Paper recycling
  • Natale volunteered to laminate new signs for recycling boxes
  • We determined that is was not necessary to purchase blue recycling cans for everyone's office--cardboard boxes work just fine
  • We decided that only office paper should be recycled in these boxes, not food wrappers and other recycling or trash

Glass and other plastic recycling

  • Erin will purchase another container for recycling glass and the red cups
  • We will investigate getting warehouse personnel to take these to the recycling dumpster
  • The color of this container should be green

Battery recycling

  • David will look into getting a free container for batteries
  • Mark will look at prices for containers at Home Depot this weekend

Florescent light recycling

  • Mark will call Veolia to get pricing information

Paper and plastic cup recycling

  • Red cups can be recycled as discussed above
  • Val and Erin will compare prices of more environmentally friendly alternatives
  • The difference in cost will have to be paid for by the task force

Task force e-mails

  • Mark will draft two e-mails: one announcing the environmental initiatives discussed above and another announcing our bake sale to raise funds. E-mails will be sent when the initiatives discussed above are in place.

Bake sale

  • We will have a bake sale to raise funds for the green initiatives of the task force
  • Our goal is to be self-funded
  • We will buy muffins from Costco and sell them in-house in the break room
  • Proceeds will pay for our activities, particularly for the items discussed below

Other fundraising ideas

  • Book sale on eBay
  • Raffle
  • Car wash

Expected future expenditures (costs)

  • Recycling tubes (tubes specifically for this purpose are $30 each or more)
  • Recycling florescent bulbs
  • Repaclacing incandescent interior bulbs with compact florescents
  • Paying for the difference in an incandescent and energy efficient floodlight for outside
  • Paying for the difference between our current kitchen supplies (i.e., plastic forks, cups, etc.) and more environmentally friendly alternatives
